On-stage/performance personality: Focused, always prepared and well-rehearsed (generally does extra private rehearsals for choreography bc he sucks at dancing rip), flirts with the audience a lot (winking, blowing kisses, sticking his tongue out, making hearts) -- generally does not make many mistakes, but when he does he acts cute and pretends it didn’t happen (although he tortures himself over it when he’s alone later on lol). Always providing fanservice via skinship, often finds a camera and eye-fucks the heck out of it for maximum broadcast time. He’s careful about his face due to being the visual; thus he actually practises laughing and tests certain expressions out in front of the mirror to avoid looking ugly (was once caught by another member and mocked for like 2 weeks). However, also notices the needs of the other members, so if someone is not getting enough screen time he would try to bring them attention by directing the conversation towards them.

Off-stage personality: Needs A LOT of time alone, and would often sit alone in his room for ages reading and listening to music. He gets worn out very often, and sleeps out his tiredness. During his “recuperation” periods he can be very hard to approach and even cold due to a low availability of emotional energy. Often retreats into his own world, and becomes very invested in himself -- did I do that move right? How did my face turn out on that show? My vocal condition was bad today. What should I spend my pay on? etc. He needs a lot of external reassurance and validation (which he finds from his members and also online, where he stalks forums and threads about him). He’s very pessimistic when allowed to dwell on things for too long, and he tends to become bitter over small things given the opportunity to think about them. He holds a lot of grudges and his bottled feelings and frustrations can manifest (although rarely) as depressive bouts or explosions of anger.

Namsoo was born in Jeonju to an upper-middle class family. His early childhood was characterised by its vibrancy and freedom, as he was often led along by his older brother (of 3 years) to play tag and by his little sister (of 1 year) on bug hunts.

When he was five, he played the part of the prince in a kindergarten production of Snow White, standing on the stage for the first time and meeting the eyes of his parents in the audience as they radiated with pride. It was his first taste of what he would come to term the “perfect alignment of energy”, when he could feel the audience enraptured by what they saw.

Following his personal request, Namsoo was sent to many dance, singing and acting classes. However, these environments, far from being places that nurtured artistic growth, soon turned out to be highly competitive -- the tender, beautiful ecstasy he once felt on the stage morphed into a need to please the escalating demands of his parents (his mother in particular), who urged him to strive to be the best, to put on facades of camaraderie and “healing smiles” even when he was both mentally and physically exhausted.

He attended eight years of these classes, eventually cracking under the pressure of being a star child and screwing up at a concert in front of more than two thousand people. This traumatised him greatly, and for weeks he was in a numb daze, unable to accept his own failure. Eventually his parents withdrew him from his classes and he stayed on the down-low for the next three years -- a lone, untouched piano (a 12th birthday present) the only reminder of his performance days.

When he was sixteen, his brother (who up until then had excelled academically) was suddenly scouted as a model, abruptly leaving the house to pursue this path after taking a large sum of money from the family savings without permission. It was a great shock to the entire family, and many arguments erupted between his parents as a result of this -- who was to blame? How did our son turn out like this? Little things became big issues and soon it was clear to Namsoo that his parents were poor communicators who (in his opinion) would be better off divorced. To escape the daily yelling and arguments, he made a safe space for he and his sister in his room, where he would strum his old guitar and hum melodies for her when she was upset, or turn up the music on his speakers to drown out the noise. His old flame -- his love for music -- slowly resurfaced, this time less of a thirst for the glitz and glamour of recognition, but manifesting as something gentle, therapeutic.

When he was seventeen, Namsoo accidentally met up with his estranged brother, who had made it quite big as a runway model. Although there was initial bitterness and animosity, the two became closer (without the knowledge of their parents) and Namsoo was introduced to some people in the entertainment industry. In particular, he was acquainted with a few insiders who told him (when he reluctantly showed them his compositions at the bullying insistence of his brother) that he had the potential to become a star. These words somehow filled him with gusto, and as he imagined a world in which he could make a living off of music, it was enough for him to recall both the exhilaration of onstage performance, as well as the healing process of music in his private world. Soon he joined S.O.S., his only regret being that his sister was now left alone in the household of warring parents.
